About the Opportunity

Rawa Community School is seeking a full-time Relief Teacher to join our small team at

our Kunawarritji Campus in Term 4, 2026.

​

Dates of engagement: 9 November 2026 – 11 December 2026 (negotiable)

​

This is a unique opportunity to live and work in a remote Aboriginal community and play

an important role in supporting students, the classroom teacher and the day-to-day

operation of a small school campus.

​

The Kunawarritji Campus is currently a one-teacher school, with students ranging from

years K-12. We have a small pool of casual employees who work as Martu language

teachers and other general support staff roles. Student enrolment currently sits at 14

students, with an average daily attendance of 4 students. The successful applicant will

be covering leave for the classroom Teacher and will need to be someone who enjoys

working as part of a small, supportive team.

The role is varied and no two days are necessarily the same. While the primary focus is

teaching, the successful applicant will also contribute to the practical operation of the

school and work collaboratively with colleagues to meet the changing needs of the

campus.

Pay and Conditions

Annual Salary range:

$83,707 - $130,216 pro-rata

Salary is set based on qualification and years of experience.

Key Responsibilities

K-12 Teacher

Under the direction of the Principal, you will:

• Teach Literacy, Mathematics and other key learning areas aligned to student

IEPs and the WA Curriculum Framework.

• Work with Martu teachers and Teacher Assistants to ensure students are

adequately supported to engage in learning and social activities.

• Support students with a range of learning needs and abilities.

• Encourage positive engagement, participation and relationships within the

school.

• Help create a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environment.

• Foster positive relationships with parents, carers and the broader community.

School and Campus Support

As part of a small team, you will also contribute to the practical operation of the

campus. Duties may include:

• Assisting with cooking and meal preparation when required.Rawa Community School

• Cleaning and maintaining school facilities.

• Assisting with the preparation and maintenance of school areas and resources.

• Scanning, filing and organising documents.

• Undertaking basic administrative tasks.

• Assisting with deliveries, supplies and general campus tasks.

• Working collaboratively with other staff to ensure the school operates

effectively.

The balance of duties will vary depending on student numbers, staff availability and the

needs of the campus.

About You

We are looking for someone who is:

• TRBWA Registered Teacher

• Experienced living and working in remote Aboriginal communities

• Warm, patient and approachable.

• Reliable, responsible and willing to contribute wherever needed.

• Flexible and adaptable in their approach to work.

• Comfortable working with children and young people.

• Able to work effectively under the direction of the Principal, who is ordinarily

based at our other campus in Punmu.

• Comfortable working independently.

• A team player who enjoys working in a small team.

• Practical and willing to undertake a variety of tasks.

• Respectful of Aboriginal culture, community life and cultural obligations.

• Comfortable living and working in a remote and isolated environment.

• Willing to learn new skills and take on responsibilities outside the traditional

classroom teacher role.

 

Essential Requirements

The successful applicant must:

• Have full registration with the TRBWA

• Hold a current WWCC or ability to obtain prior to commencement

• Hold a full Australian driver's licence.

• Be willing and able to drive 4WD vehicles.

• Meet all relevant employment, child-safety and screening requirements

Life in Kunawarritji

Kunawarritji is a remote Aboriginal community in Western Australia. Living and working

at the Kunawarritji Campus provides an opportunity to become part of a small

community and to experience a very different pace and style of life from that found in

larger towns and cities.

​

The school currently operates as a one-teacher campus, making this a particularly

close-knit working environment. Student numbers can change significantly from week

to week as families travel for cultural and family business. Flexibility is therefore an

important part of the role.

​

The community has a community store and medical clinic, as well as an airstrip with

mail delivery flights once a week, weather permitting.

​

The remote location means that applicants should be comfortable with limited access

to shops, services and entertainment and be prepared for a degree of isolation.

There are also a large number of dogs in the community. Many dogs roam freely around

the school and teacher housing areas. The dogs are generally friendly, but applicants

should be comfortable living and working in an environment where there are often a lot

of dogs around.

Living and Working Remotely

The position includes furnished accommodation and utilities free of charge, providing

the successful applicant with a base within the community.

Living in a remote community is an important part of this opportunity. Applicants

should give consideration to whether they will enjoy:

• Living in a small and isolated community.

• Working closely with a small team.

• A lifestyle where plans and routines can change quickly.

• Limited access to shops and services.

• Travelling significant distances when leaving the community.

• Contributing positively and respectfully to community life.

relationships, develop new skills and contribute to the education and wellbeing of

students in a unique setting.

Hours of work:

An average of 76hr per fortnight over a 12 month period, with 4 weeks annual leave.

Base hours: 7:30am – 3:30pm Monday to Friday.

Unused Annual Leave is paid out at the end of the contract of employment.

Additional benefits / allowances:

Remote location allowance $414.83 per fortnight (pro-rata) when living and working in

the community.

Travel arrangements:

Travel and accommodation provided by the school from Perth to Kunawarritji

Community at the beginning and end of contract.
