ABOUT RAWA COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Building multi-lingual and culturally inclusive futures for our children

Rawa Community School has two campuses. The larger campus is in Punmu, a small Aboriginal community situated on the eastern shores of Lake Dora, a large salt lake in Karlamilyi National Park in the Pilbara region of northern Western Australia.  It is approximately 600km by road inland from the community’s major service centre of Port Hedland.  Approximately 170km further east from Punmu is the smaller community of Kunawarritji at Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route. The locations of Punmu and Kunawarritji are amongst the more remote in Australia lying between the Great Sandy and Gibson Deserts.

Rawa Community School is overseen by the Rawa Community School Board: a body of elders and Punmu and Kunawarritji community members whose membership is determined by traditional means and which is directly responsible to the community.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Holistic On Country Led Learning Model

Developed closely with elders and members of Martu communities and informed by CSIRO two way learning,  RCS has created a holistic On Country led learning model that integrates the WA curriculum with cultural identity and knowledge to promote higher quality learning. Using Martu kinship, land and language at the heart of the curriculum  has increased care giver and student input alike and improved attendance across all ages.  RSC is seeking to fund a 4 year pilot program to track outcomes and develop an evidence base for the model.

Infrastructure Redevelopment Project

A strategic and critical redevelopment of the school’s facilities in line with its long term vision is required to guarantee that physical infrastructure positively contributes to providing top quality education for the children and youth of the communities, Punmu and Kunawarritji. RSC is actively seeking funding to undertake critical upgrades now.
